The Excelsior Springs Police Department (ESPD) is committed to providing exceptional public safety services to our community. Authorized with 24 full-time police officer positions, our department includes dedicated teams for administration, investigations, patrol, and school resource officers (SROs). We are also proud to have our own 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), which serves as the dispatch center for police, fire, and ambulance services, ensuring prompt and coordinated responses to emergencies.
GENERAL DUTIES
As a dedicated part of the Excelsior Springs Police Department, this position plays a critical role in protecting life and property within our community by enforcing local laws and ordinances, alongside additional responsibilities as required.
Excelsior Springs Police Officers are responsible for a variety of essential duties, including:
- Protecting life and property within a designated area
- Preventing crime through proactive patrolling and engagement
- Apprehending individuals involved in criminal activity
- Enforcing local laws and ordinances
Officers conduct routine patrols within their assigned districts, enforce traffic regulations, respond to and investigate accidents and crime scenes, and complete special assignments as directed. The role requires an element of independent judgment, particularly in responding to complex and emergency situations.
Excelsior Springs Police Officers receive general assignments and instructions from superior officers, who review their work methods and results through detailed reports, observations, and regular discussions. This structure ensures a high standard of service, safety, and accountability in our community.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The Excelsior Springs Police Department values its officers and offers a competitive salary and benefits package to support their dedication and service.
- Starting Annual Base Salary: $52,500
- Hiring Bonus: $4,000 with a signed employment agreement

The City of Excelsior Springs provides all police uniforms and equipment, including a duty weapon and an off-duty weapon, as well as uniform cleaning services.
LATERAL TRANSFERS
The Excelsior Springs Police Department welcomes applications from current law enforcement officers interested in joining our team through lateral transfer. To qualify, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Experience: Candidates must have been a full-time, non-probationary law enforcement officer with at least one (1) year of experience.
- Certification: Candidates must hold a current Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Class “A” certificate at the time of application or shortly thereafter.
Lateral Transfer Benefits: As a lateral transfer, your starting pay will be determined based on your experience, ensuring a competitive salary aligned with your background and expertise.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be 21 years of age and a U. S. citizen or lawfully authorized alien worker.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Ability to pass a physical exam and drug test.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws.
- Willingness to work shifts, holidays, weekends and be on call 24/7.
- Missouri P.O.S.T certification, or currently enrolled in an approved academy.
