You may have 3 to 12 chickens, depending on your lot size. (Please ensure your property allows for the proper acreage and footage between neighbors, needed to pass inspection <em>prior<\/em> to turning in your application.)<\/li>\n<li>The yearly renewal fee is $50.<\/li>\n<li>Tenants and renters of property may keep chickens with the written permission of the property owner. Proof of such permission must be submitted with the application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-639 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cityofesmo.com\/espd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/chicken-coop.jpg\" alt=\"Chicken Coop photo\" width=\"400\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cityofesmo.com\/espd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/chicken-coop.jpg 400w, https:\/\/cityofesmo.com\/espd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/chicken-coop-300x287.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Restrictions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Chickens must be kept in the backyard and are not allowed in the front or side yard.<\/li>\n<li>Coops must be placed within a specific distance from property lines and homes.<\/li>\n<li>A fence must surround the well-ventilated chicken coop and must be approved by Animal Control. Chickens must be kept in the coop when the resident is not present.<\/li>\n<li>Hens are allowed. Roosters are not allowed on a property less than three acres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Find a complete list of chicken requirements, including location, safety and permitting standards, under the approved <a href=\"https:\/\/cityofesmo.com\/espd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/210.125-Backyard-Chickens.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Section 210.125<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Best Practices<\/h3>\n<div class=\"full-width-text__main\">\n<p>Ensure the safe-keeping of residential chickens by following these best practices provided by Animal Control.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wash or sanitize hands after handling chickens, eggs, feed and water, and after cleaning the coop.<\/li>\n<li>Collect eggs two to three times a day and wash them in luke-warm water. Store eggs in the refrigerator and discard any that are broken or cracked.<\/li>\n<li>Keep chicken feed in a dry area that is off the ground and airtight.<\/li>\n<li>Provide chickens with fresh water daily and ensure they have a safe portion of the coop to nest in each night.<\/li>\n<li>Place a roof or chicken wire over the coop and bury hardware around the perimeter to ensure predators cannot get inside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Excelsior Springs residents can apply for a permit to raise chickens if your lot is 0.20 acres or larger.
