City to adopt 2018 ICC building codes

The city of Excelsior Springs Community Development Department has presented the 2018 International Code Council (ICC) building codes to the City Council for consideration of adoption. Currently the City operates under the 2012 ICC codes and is moving towards adopting the 2018 codes.

Codes are adopted so cities may retain the right to conduct buildings inspections. Every three years the International Code Council adopts new building codes after a process of review that includes more than one week of review of the proposed codes by Building Officials throughout the United States.

The Building Trades division of the City would primarily enforce the 2018 Code editions, with the exception of the fire code which is primarily enforced by the fire marshal.

The City Council has been presented with the first reading of the ordinances to adopt the following ICC codes:

International Building Code, 2018 Edition (IBC)

International Existing Building Code, 2018 Edition (IEBC)

International Residential Code, 2018 Edition (IRC)

International Plumbing Code, 2018 Edition (IPC)

National Electrical Code, 2017 Edition (NEC)

International Mechanical Code, 2018 Edition (IMC)

International Fuel Gas Code, 2018 Edition (IFGC)

National Fire Protections Association 99, 2018 Edition (NFPA 99)

International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, 2018 Edition (ISPSA)

International Property Maintenance Code, 2018 Edition (IPMC)

International Private Sewage Disposal Code, 2018 Edition (IPSDC)

The Council will wait 90 days to allow for comments on the code. City staff anticipates that the codes will be adopted by January 18, 2022.
