Save America's Treasures Grant - City of Excelsior Springs, MO

The City of Excelsior Springs has received a $500,000 grant from the Department of Interior, National Park Service (NPS) funded through the Historic Preservation Fund and Save America’s Treasurers grant program, for the restoration of the Hall of Waters. Forty-two of these grants totaling $12.8 million were awarded for projects across the United States. With these funds, organizations and agencies conserve significant U.S. cultural and historic resources, which illustrate, interpret, and are associated with the great events, ideas, and individuals that contribute to our nation’s history and culture.

The City of Excelsior Springs will provide $500,000 in matching funds to address a structural issue at the south end of the water bar in the Hall of Springs, rehabilitate the glass block and steel tower, repoint, clean, and seal the north and west exterior faces of the building including stone replacement/repair, and repair the lintels; replace damaged cast stone units on guard rails and spot repoint, restore entrance systems on the north and west side and around the Hall of Springs, and miscellaneous repairs as funds will allow.

In 2019, Congress appropriated funding for Save America’s Treasurers from the Historic Preservation Fund which uses revenue from federal oil leases to provide a broad range of preservation assistance without expending tax dollars. The program requires applicants to leverage project funds from other sources to match the grant money dollar for dollar. This award of $12.8 million will leverage more than $25.9 million in private and public investment. The Federal Save America’s Treasurers program was established in 1998 and is carried out in partnership with Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). From 1999 to 2018, the program provided $323 million to more than 1,200 projects to preserve and conserve nationally significant collections, artifacts, structures, and sites. Requiring a dollar-for-dollar private match, the grants leveraged more than $479 million in private investment and supported more than 16,000 local jobs.
