On Wednesday May 12, the City of Excelsior Springs\u2019 Historic Preservation Commission presented Preservation awards to three property owners for improvements made on their properties.  May is Preservation month, and the commission wished to thank owners of historic properties for their work in preservation.<\/p>\n

\"\"The award for Preservation of an Investment Property was presented to Kenny Manley<\/strong> for his work on 515 Benton Ave.  Mr. Manley restored the two-story c. 1900 home by replacing the roof and adding gutters, restoring the front porch and railing, replacing an overhang over the back porch, replacing the front door, and painting the entire structure before selling the home.  \u201cI enjoyed learning the history of the house,\u201d Mr. Manley stated.  \u201cIt had originally been owned by a couple who had a grocery store where Broadway Bar and Grill is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

\"spacer\"The Preservation Award for a Residential Property was presented to Larry and Lisa Krause<\/strong> for exterior work and a new paint scheme at 403 Concourse Ave. The house had affectionately been referred to as the blueberry house until Mr. and Mrs. Krause chose to paint it yellow, thus it has become the sunshine house.<\/p>\n

Mr. and Mrs. Krause are continuing with restoration work on the interior of the home.

Brad and Brenda Eales<\/strong> were presented the Preservation Award for a Commercial Property for their restoration of 120 E. Broadway St.  This building dates back to approximately 1910 and was restored to accommodate a retail space on the first floor and a residential space on the second floor.  The building had the lead paint removed from the exterior and was repainted Needlepoint Navy.  Mr. and Mrs. Eales were also approved to receive a 353 tax abatement for improving this property.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Historic Preservation Commission hears requests on the second Wednesday of every month at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Hall of Waters.  Tax abatements through the 353 program may be available to property owners who are making improvements to their properties.  All property owners in the historic district must apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness before making any exterior changes to their historic property.  If you have questions or would like to submit an application for a CoA, please call the Community Development office at 816-630-0756. <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
