City of Excelsior Springs Invites Artists to Tell Our Story Through the Freedom 250 City Art Poster Project
Excelsior Springs, Missouri – The City of Excelsior Springs is inviting artists, students, designers, illustrators and creative minds of all ages to help tell our community’s story on a national stage.
As part of the National Endowment for the Arts and the United States Conference of Mayors’ Freedom 250 City Art Poster Project, Excelsior Springs will select one original work of art to represent our city as America celebrates its 250th anniversary.
Mayor Sonya Morgan believes this is more than an art competition—it is an opportunity to capture the heart and spirit of Excelsior Springs through the eyes of the people who know it best.
“Every community has a story worth telling, and ours is one of resilience, healing, creativity and hope,” said Mayor Sonya Morgan. “For nearly 80 years, people came to Excelsior Springs seeking the healing power of our mineral waters. Today, they continue to discover a community rich in history, entrepreneurship, arts, architecture, recreation and the people who make this such a special place to call home. This project gives us the opportunity to share that story with communities across the country and future generations through the power of art.”
Artists are encouraged to interpret Excelsior Springs through their own experiences and perspectives. Whether inspired by the Hall of Waters, The Elms Resort & Spa, our historic downtown, mineral springs, parks and trails, local events, public art, neighborhoods, or the people who have shaped our community, submissions should celebrate what makes Excelsior Springs uniquely American while reflecting the voices, history and future of our city.
The selected artwork will become Excelsior Springs’ official Freedom 250 poster and will be submitted for inclusion in a national exhibition featuring cities from across the United States. The winning artist will receive local recognition and have the opportunity to showcase Excelsior Springs to audiences nationwide.
The City welcomes submissions from professional artists, emerging artists, students and community members who have a connection to Excelsior Springs.
Contest Timeline
- Contest Opens: August 12, 2026
- Submission Deadline: September 30, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
- Winning Artist Announced: October 19, 2026
Artwork must be original and designed in a vertical 24-inch by 32-inch format suitable for poster reproduction. Complete contest rules, design specifications and submission information will be available on the City’s website beginning August 12.
