Meals on Wheels

The City of Excelsior Springs is looking to build a volunteer program to reinstate the delivery of hot meals to homebound residents. Currently residents are being delivered frozen meals. Permanent volunteer drivers are asked to volunteer one day a week. Substitute drivers are also needed. Substitute drivers will be called on when the regularly scheduled driver is unavailable.

Meals are picked up between 11 and 11:15 a.m. at the Excelsior Springs Senior Center, located at the Community Center, 500 Tiger Drive. Meal delivery generally takes between 20 to 40 minutes and requires volunteers to return containers and clipboard to the Senior Center after completing the route. Each volunteer driver is assigned one route, which consists of 4 to 10 meals. All drivers must possess a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance. All drivers must fill out a volunteer application and pass a background check.

If anyone is interested in volunteering or donating to the program, download the Volunteer Application and return to Jeff Barge at the Community Center, or call 816-656-2500.

It’s More Than Just a Meal

For many seniors, the trusted Home Delivered Meals volunteer or staff member who shows up every day with a hot meal and a warm smile is the only person they see or speak with all day. This special delivery is the reason to get up in the morning, something to look forward to and a reminder to take good care of themselves.
